A Smooth Transition From A Municipality To A City


Vigan is known for its historical heritage. A lots of tourists have visited this place, admiring the fascinating architectures. Behind the walls that they have seen, there are stories from its past. Its transformation into a city has a huge impact to its economy. Which continue the rise of its wide variety of tourism.



Vigan was founded in 1572 by Juan de Salcedo, a Spanish conquistador. It became a center for Spanish political, religious, and commercial activities in the northern part of the Philippines. The city was named Ciudad Fernandina in honor of King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Vigan was officially granted city status through a Royal Decree issued by King Ferdinand VI of Spain on September 7, 1757, effectively making it a city during the Spanish colonial period; this status was later recognized and revalidated by a Philippine law (Republic Act No. 8988) signed by President Joseph Estrada on December 27, 2000, solidifying Vigan as a city in the present day. Vigan is renowned for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, which is a major reason for its designation as a city. 



Vigan has been famous for its old colarchitectural spanish colonial design which has been preserved for nearly 500 years. Known for its famous calle crisologo which is a symbol to vigan and contributes to its economy. The transition of Vigan from being a municipality into a city contributed for the needs of the citizens of this town. 

Still rising to this day, Vigan is a huge part of the Philippines and a symbol of the hardships our filipinos fought for. Preserved from the past as remembrance for people today and visitors.
